Ambassadeurs / Aristide Bruant. 1892

Lot 580: Ambassadeurs / Aristide Bruant. 1892

Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 38 1/4 x 54 7/8 in./96.8 x 139.2 cm Imp. Edw. Ancourt, Paris "The Montmartre chansonnier turned restauranteur, Aristide Bruant, was a strong, imposing personality, and in the several posters of him Toulouse-Lautrec conveys this by letting him dominate the picture completely, with virtually nothing else to distract our attention, and with Bruant's characteristic red scarf, hat and walking stick adding impact to the image ... this design was seen by Bruant as a masterpiece, but the manager of the Ambassadeurs rejected it as too brutally frank and unflattering; the only way the performer could get it accepted was by warning the manager that he would not appear on stage unless there was a copy on either side of the proscenium, and unless the whole of Paris was plastered with further copies" (Wine Spectator, 46). The same image would be recycled by Lautrec two years later when Bruant appeared at the Eldorado (see PAI-LV, 517).

Catalogue d'Affiches Artistiques / A. Arnould. 1896

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 15 1/4 x 11 in./38.7 x 28 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris The original lithograph was entitled Le Débauche (The Debaucher) and was subsequently used as the cover of the Catalogues d'Affiches Artistiques, published in June 1896 by A. Arnaud. In this case, the debaucher is Lautrec's painter-friend, Maxime Dethomas (1868-1928), shown pinching the nipple of a poorly-clad woman. Frey makes an interesting observation: "It has been said of Dethomas both that he was an eager participant in seductions and brothel visits, and that he was in fact a little straight-laced and that Henry's use [of him in this image] was a kind of teasing. Increasingly, however, when Henry showed his friends in compromising positions, it was because he had observed them thus" (p. 411). This is the original lithograph, prior to its use as the cover, from an edition of 100 impressions.

Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 32 1/4 x 23 in./82 x 58.3 cm Imp. Edw. Ancourt, Paris "The scenery for the unsuccessful play Le Chariot de Terre Cuite makes another appearance in this cover for the ninth and last edition of L'Estampe Originale in March 1895, printed by Ancourt, Paris. On the left half of the large sheet, which is used in horizontal format, Lautrec has varied the motif of the Divan Japonais poster (see Lot 579), though the much-feted Misia Natanson is now seated in the box instead of Jane Avril" (Adriani, p. 181).

Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 33 x 46 in./84 x 117 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris The subject is a book exposing the decadence of Berlin society, written by Lautrec's friend Victor Joze. His "poster focuses the spectator's attention on the hindquarters of four horses, the largest of which [is] also being closely observed by a caricature of the Kaiser standing in a guardbox. The implications of this, along with the book's title, provoked a protest from the German ambassador to France and nearly caused an international incident. Joze, too, wrote Lautrec asking for him to withdraw the poster, as he felt the depiction of a German officer, together with the anti-German tone of the book, would not be tolerated by the police and could get him in trouble. Lautrec, however, refused to stop distribution of the poster, and as he had paid for it [himself], the publisher was not able to stop the distribution. [Thereafter], according to art dealer Edmond Sagot, the value of [Lautrec's] work quadrupled" (Frey, p. 398).

Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 35 3/4 x 49 in./90.7 x 124.4 cm R. Thomas & Co., Toulouse Exhibited: "Toulouse-Lautrec and the French Imprint," Zimmerili Art Museum, 2006-2007 (cat #115) Of the thirty posters created by Toulouse-Lautrec, this is, without a doubt, the rarest of them all! Wittrock indicates that there is "one known impression" and Adriani confirms that "Only one example has survived where the lithograph has been used as a pictorial motif stuck onto a lettered poster . . . but the drawing had to be cut down somewhat on all four sides for the purpose." "Arthur Huc, art-lover and editor of the magazine La Dépêche de Toulouse, used the lithograph, which was printed by the firm of Cassan Fils in Toulouse, together with the lettered poster . . . to advertise the serial novel Les Drames de Toulouse, by A. Siègel" (Adriani, p. 23). He dates the lithograph to possibly the end of 1891 and the complete poster as seen here by the spring of 1892. Julia Frey, in her excellent biography of Lautrec, gives some background and detail on the novel and the artist's approach to it: Lautrec's "use of large grey areas created by spattering black ink on white paper produced a monochromatic effect which was probably intended to highlight the historical character of the serial, based on a true event, the Calas affair, made famous in the eighteenth century by Voltaire. In it, a father was tortured to death for not confessing to his son's murder - in fact, a suicide. The notoriety of the case was based on the anti-Protestant bias of the trial, which condemned the father by arguing that he had murdered his son to prevent him from converting to Catholicism" (p. 301). Seeing the poster the way it was intended, solves a mystery: Le Pendu is listed everywhere as one of the 30 posters by Lautrec, and yet without this context, it has seemed to most observers to simply be one of his many prints.

Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 24 3/8 x 31 7/8 in./62 x 80.8 cm Imp. Edw. Ancourt, Paris This poster was put up on 20 January 1893, as an advertisement for a small café concert at 75 Rue des Martyrs, started by Jehan Sarrazin and, since autumn 1892, run by Edouard Fournier. The club was decorated in the so-called Japanese style, with lanterns and mock bamboo. Unlike the Moulin Rouge poster, it is not the star who draws the attention here—the singer Yvette Guilbert, who had her first stage successes here in 1892, is up in the top left-hand corner with her head cut off by the edge of the sheet—but two spectators in a box, typical of the literary audiences which filled the Divan Japonais: the performer Jane Avril and the art critic Edouard Dujardin. “Neither of these notable characters deign to look at Guilbert on stage, whom Lautrec has portrayed as acephalous, probably as a witty response to her complaint that he caricatured her and made her ugly” (Wagner, p. 21).

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 31 1/8 x 24 in./79.2 x 60.9 cm The poster, with its particularly enticing exuberance, was reproduced in monochrome in Le Courrier Francais on February 16, 1896. It was used to advertise the appearance of Églantine Demay, Jane Avril, Cléopatre, and Gazelle in the Quadrille Naturaliste, at the Palace Theatre in London. The dance had been developed from the can-can, created by Celeste Mogador, and was performed in the formation of four, mainly at the Elysee Montmartre, the Jardin de Paris, the Frascati and the Moulin Rouge. In a letter written on January 19, 1896, in London (Musée d’Albi), Jane Avril and Églantine asked Lautrec for the poster, giving exact wording for the text: ‘Troupe de Mlle Eglantine./1 Eglantine, 2 Jane Avril/3 Cleopatre 4 Gazelle/“Palace Theatre,” because we shall certainly be appearing in other places as well, and then we could use the same poster. Thanks in advance and good luck and every success with the work…Please answer straight away, because the first night is the evening of Monday 20th, and we want people to see our poster before that. So please do your best…’. And while posterity has certainly been impressed by the greatness of this design, it was not enough at the time to save the show, which quickly folded.

Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 39 x 59 5/8 in./99.2 x 151.4 cm Imp. Edw. Ancourt, Paris The poster advertises Reine de Joie/Moeurs du Demi-Monde (Queen of Joy, or, The World of Easy Virtue) by Victor Joze, a Polish writer of cheap erotic novels and a friend of Lautrec, who designed two more lithographs for him in later years. The episode shown is one in which the heroine of the novel, Helene Roland, kisses the corpulent Olizac on the nose at dinner. At the insistence of Baron Rothschild, who believed the main character in the novel, a Baron Rosenfeld, to be modeled on himself, attempts were made to suppress the entire edition. This did not, however, prevent the publishers of Fin de Siecle from riding on the publicity of such a scandal and selling parts of the story. As Ebria Feinblatt notes: “The poster is one of the most piquant and popular that the artist produced ... Aside from the acutely realistic characterizations, the impact of the composition lies in the skillful use of pure color to model the forms, which assume an abstract quality” (Wagner, p. 19).

Ancourt, Paris “This official poster for La Revue Blanche is considered by many to be Lautrec’s strongest individual work. In it, using a combination of economical line and implied movement, large flat areas of color and carefully observed detail, he shows Misia Natanson [wife of the magazine’s editor, Thadée Natanson] ice-skating at the Palais de Glace, an ice rink opened at the Rond-Point des Champs Elysees by Jules Roques in 1894. The entire poster is like a little joke, as if Lautrec were amusing himself by proving that he could show an ice-skater without ever showing her skates (Frey, p. 408).

Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 23 5/8 x 31 1/8 in./60 x 79 cm According to Adriani, “May Milton was an English dancer with a pale, serious face and strong chin who appeared at the Moulin Rouge.” Toulouse-Lautrec is almost brutally frank in depicting her face, neither pretty nor youthful, and pointing out the inappropriateness of the white debutante’s dress with puffed sleeves which she wore on stage. Yet the point is made with such gentle irony that it may have been missed, or ignored, by the performer herself, as she apparently used the poster for personal publicity.

Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 37 x 51 1/2 in./94 x 130.8 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris “Universally considered his most brilliant and successful design” (Wagner, p. 22), Toulouse-Lautrec shows “Jane Avril on stage doing her specialty, which, according to contemporaries, was essentially a cancan that she made exotic by making a pretense of prudery – the ‘depraved virgin’ image aimed at arousing the prurience in the predominantly male audience. The sexual innuendo was captured by the artist by contrasting the dancer’s slender legs with the robust, phallic neck of the bass viol in the foreground–a masterly stroke that not only heightens our perception but also creates an unusual perspective: we see the performer as an orchestra member would, and this allows Toulouse-Lautrec to show, as if inadvertently, how tired and somewhat downcast she looks close-up, not at all in keeping with the gaiety of the dance that is perceived by the audience. It is clear, as Maindron has pointed out, that she is dancing entirely for the viewer’s pleasure, not hers, which makes it a highly poignant image. Seemingly without trying, Toulouse-Lautrec not only creates a great poster but makes a personal statement: Only a person who really cares about his subject as a human being would portray her with such startling candor” (Wine Spectator, 41).

Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 15 7/8 x 20 1/4 in./48.4 x 51.5 cm The Elles collection is Lautrec’s most famous brothel series, an edition of lithographs depicting prostitutes simply referred to as Elles (Them). This ambiguous title both recalls the common phrase ces dames (these ladies), and at the same time is the pronoun indicating all females. Although the women of the Elles series are prostitutes, they appear desexualized, shown in postures that emphasize the everyday and unglamorous nature of their occupation. In this instance, putting her hair back up after finishing with a client; the only indication that a man is even in the room is his top hat resting gingerly on her bed. “It was the pictorial epilogue to what the artist had experienced in the maisons closes of the Rue des Moulins, the Rue d’Amboise, and the Rue Joubert. ‘They’ are ‘women to my liking,’ as he used to say cynically, and he often lived with them for weeks at a time during the years 1892 to 1895, a constant witness of their daily lives, of their suffering and intimacy” (Adriani, p. 222). The series was placed on exhibition at the Galeries de la Plume’s twentieth Salon des Cent on April 22, 1896, as indicated in this poster. This is the rare state of the previous poster before the addition of bottom text, used as the frontispiece of the Elles suite.

Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 18 1/4 x 24 1/4 in./46.3 x 61.5 cm “In the summer of 1895 a competition was held by the art-dealers Boussard, Valadon et Cie. for a poster to advertise a biography of Napoleon by William Milligan Sloan, which was to be published in the Century Magazine in New York in 1896. No doubt encouraged by Maurice Joyant, a friend from his youth and director of Boussard and Valadon, Lautrec entered the competition . . . Although the handling of the motif should actually have appealed to the specially selected jury – the successful society painters Detaille, Gérôme and Vibert, and the Napoleon scholar Frédéric Masson – the design was not judged worthy of a prize. From the 21 entries, Lucien Métivet, a minor illustrator and former fellow student of Lautrec’s in the Atelier Cormon, won the prize. The rejection of Lautrec’s work is all the more astonishing since Lautrec, no doubt with the jury in mind, produced a composition in full sympathy with the elevated traditional image of the great man, and aimed to give an accurate representation of the historic facts, even down to the details of the uniforms. After vain attempts to sell the design elsewhere, the artist decided to have an edition printed at his own expense” (Adriani, p. 190). “Lautrec’s Napoleon occupies a distinctive place in his oeuvre as his only poster on a historical theme. Omitting any glorifying attributes, Lautrec presented his famous subject directly and humanly; there is dignity and restraint in the hint of Napoleon’s pride and melancholy. Yet it was probably this very simplicity and absence of panoply that was responsible for Lautrec’s failure to win first prize” (Wagner, p. 28). From the hand-signed edition of 100 copies (#38). “

Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 23 3/8 x 16 in./59.2 x 40.6 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris Commissioned by Stone & Kimball (the Chicago publisher of The Chap Book) from La Plume (which provided the design by Lautrec), this poster was never used in the United States -- possibly it was intended to promote the magazine’s sales in France only. “The Irish American Bar at 33 rue Royale was furnished in gleaming mahogany, and had a Chinese-Indian bar-keeper called Ralph, who with stoical calm served the British jockeys and trainers and local coachmen who frequented the bar. Here, too, the florid figure of Tom...the Rothschild’s coachman, a particular favorite with Lautrec for his supercilious manner ... is visible among the customers being served by Ralph with a special concoction” (Adriani, p. 196). Julia Frey makes it clear that the subject of this poster was also a home-away-from-home for Lautrec: He “let people know he could be found every afternoon in a certain bar. For several years from 1894 onwards, it was the Irish and American Bar. ... There, it is said, [Lautrec] presided over the clients in the bar as he had over his house guests, insisting to Ralph ... that people he didn’t like not be admitted” (Frey, p. 390). This is a rare version of the poster with an elephant remarque in the lower left.

Condition Report: Two volumes in later hardcover binding. Very good condition.
