HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901). L'ARGENT. 1895. 12x9 inches, 30x23 cm. Eugène Verneau, Paris.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) L'ARGENT. 1895. 12x9 1/4 inches, 30 1/2x23 1/2 cm. Eugène Verneau, Paris. Condition A-: minor abrasions in image. Matted and framed. Both the Théâtre de l'Oeuvre and the Théâtre Libre commissioned Toulouse-Lautrec to design illustrated programs. L'Argent is among the best he designed. Toulouse-Lautrec depicts this comedy's characters, Monsieur and Madame Reynard (owners of the brothel where the play takes place), walking away from a table. It is a powerful and a dynamic image. The diagonal of the composition and the simple figures, constructed of broad areas of flat color, exude the sense of Japonisme that both influenced Toulouse-Lautrec's work and pervaded it. Wittrock 97, Adriani 133-II, Delteil 15, Adhemar 148.

Description: TOULOUSE-LAUTREC HENRI DE: (1864-1901) French Painter. Autograph Note, unsigned, on one side of his rare personal printed visiting card, n.p. (London), n.d. (May 1898). In bold pencil the artist grants a pass for the original recipient to an exhibition, at 2pm on Monday at the Goupil Gallery at 5 Regents Street. Some extremely light, very minor age wear, otherwise VG In May 1898 Toulouse-Lautrec exhibited seventy eight works at Goupil's gallery in London. Goupil & Cie was a major art dealership with headquarters in Paris and branches in London and other European cities as well as New York and Australia. Toulouse-Lautrec's family were Anglophiles and, though not as fluent as he pretended to be, the artist spoke English well enough to travel to London. While there, he made posters, including the 'Confetti' poster, and the bicycle advert 'La Chaîne Simpson'. It was at this time that he also met and befriended Oscar Wilde.

HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901). MAY MILTON. 1895. 31x23 inches, 78x59 cm. [Ed. Ancourt, Paris.]

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) MAY MILTON. 1895. 31x23 1/4 inches, 78 1/2x59 cm. [Ed. Ancourt, Paris.] Condition B+: minor restoration and overpainting at edges; repaired tears through bottom edge affecting image. A fixture in Montmartre's demimonde, Lautrec loved to attend shows at music halls, and did so tirelessly. With his active imagination and whimsical fantasy he would often fall in love with improbable performers or acts. His attraction to May Belfort, who sang kitschy love songs while holding a cat, resulted in a poster for her. It also produced a poster for her lover, May Milton, an English dancer. It is one of the best examples of Lautrec's brilliant use of blank paper to help create an image. Against the white background, he evokes the perspective of the stage with a few lines, and conveys the dancer's figure in a similar manner. The only real detail is in her face. Against a solid blue background, the composition is a tribute to Ukiyo-e Japanese prints as interpreted by Lautrec's genius. Adriani 134-II, Delteil 336, Reims 786, DFP-II 836, Wember 764, Wittrock P17B, Wine Spectator 45, Weill 50.
